Audition: Kindertransport

by Diane Samuels

Directed by Siobhan Elam

Thursday 7th February 2019 at 7.30pm in Room One

Playing dates: 26th April-4th May 2019

This is an extremely moving and dramatic story, told against the background of the Kindertransport plan which took place in the late 1930s. It is a story about relationships, and particularly the relationship of mother and child. It’s a story about sacrifice, and guilt, and misunderstanding, and the true meaning of love.

Characters

5f, 5m (the male roles are played by the same actor).

  • The Ratcatcher: A mythical character who also plays: the Nazi Border Official, the English Organiser, the Postman and the Station Guard. Male, 30s to 50s.
  • Evelyn: English middle-class woman in her fifties.
  • Eva: Evelyn’s younger self. She starts the play at nine years old and finishes it at 17 years old. She is German-Jewish and becomes increasingly English as the story proceeds. Requires an actress in her late teens or early 20s who can convincingly play down her age at the beginning of the story.
  • Faith: Evelyn’s only child. She is in her early 20s.
  • Helga: German-Jewish woman of the late 1930s. She is her early 30s and is Eva/Evelyn’s mother. Required to age significantly in her appearance later in the play.
  • Lil: Eva/Evelyn’s English foster mother. In her 80s.

All of the roles in this play are challenging in their own way, and several of them give wonderful opportunities for the actors to show their range and versatility.
