A fabulous pair of red shoes – what’s not to love? Bold, beautiful and a bit naughty, our heroine loves her red shoes: they make her dance, and the dance is one of joy, of power, of freedom. But there’s a problem, and it’s a big problem! She can’t take the shoes off… she can’t stop the dance!

This promises to be a tantalisingly dark cabaret with dance, song, music and joyful ensemble work creating a rich, tasty palette of treats for our audiences to share.

The Director writes…

Carol Bush is a genius – it’s official! Somehow she persuaded Kneehigh to let us stage this show – I don’t know what she did, but it worked. A huge hurrah and my stomach is already full of excited butterflies at the prospect of doing something properly creative and probably mad!

This piece was created for Kneehigh back in 2000 and the first production won Best Director for Emma Rice in the 2002 TMA awards. An enticing, dark combination of cabaret, dance, song and storytelling, it explores the all-consuming nature of obsession and loss which are at the heart of this fairytale. We laugh, we delight, we cry, we share in the joy and the pain of being human.

The original company comprised four men and one woman, who performed an array of characters from the original story – all reimagined in Kneehigh’s quirky style. They were singers, actors, puppeteers, dancers and comedians. They worked hard!

We will use Kneehigh’s text and explore a creative, shared approach to the rehearsal process, but I want us to make something fresh – not try and recreate some kind of poor imitation of Rice’s original. So we need musicians, actors, dancers, singers – who are prepared to share their ideas, learn new skills and ‘muck in’ throughout the creative journey. I would very much like to have an even gender balance and variety of ages. A working weekend in a Barn somewhere is a possibility!

We have some creatives on board – but more are welcome and the process will begin with longer workshops with the whole company working together exploring ideas, improvising, creating music, playing games, learning new skills and generally experimenting. THEN we will look at shaping the text and ‘rehearsing’. So this is NOT for you if you need to know what you will be doing or saying from day one. There won’t be a great deal of ‘blocking’ going on, and highlighter pens won’t be that useful. We will change things – A LOT! But hopefully make something rather wonderful in the end!

So – if you fancy having a riotous time in rehearsal – get in touch!

Auditions will be a group affair and I would love you to share your performance skills (dancing, singing, playing an instrument, puppets, gymnastics, playing the spoons, balloon modelling, magic tricks, telling jokes – whatever!). Come along and show us what you’ve got!
